Do you hear Interval training and imagine that this is going to be a very tough, high endurance exercise programme?

Well it can be, but only if you want it to be.

You might think that all exercise programmes and fitness class routines are written by highly athletic people who have always been that way, who have never struggled with their weight or their fitness, and in many cases you might be right!

But that is not the case here!

I have struggled with my fitness, I have been overweight and I have been afraid of entering a fitness class and the gym. So I have developed this new exercise class with both the beginner and the more advanced participant in mind.

I developed the idea of a new kind of fitness class because I wanted to bring something to you that will not only challenge those who already have a good level of fitness, but will also be a good introduction into fitness for someone who is either new to exercise or returning after a break.

The benefits of interval training make it a suitable form of exercise for almost everyone.

It is an effective way to burn calories, which in turn will reduce weight and build cardiovascular strength, giving you a healthier heart and reduced blood pressure. Interval training has also been shown to contribute to the speeding up of a slow metabolism, making your body more efficient at burning energy.

Does that sound like it might be too much? It doesn’t have to be!

You might hear the term interval training and instantly think of HIIT (high intensity interval training). That for some will conjure up images of working to extreme levels and almost passing out through exhaustion before moving into the rest phase, which for some never seems to last long enough.

Again, it doesn’t have to be like that - interval training does not have to be high intensity.

I incorporate one minute of work with 30 seconds of rest, but the work part need only be as hard as you want it to be. For each work section there is a sequence of moves which all repeat themselves, which not only makes it easy to pick up but also builds your confidence as you repeat each one. Within each sequence there are choices- for example you can perform the moves with a jumping action to make them high impact, or you can scale it back and slow it down by walking through it at your own pace. This makes interval training suitable for all ages and abilities, whether you’re 17 or 70, athletic or non-athletic, there is something for you!

And then you move on to the rest section of the programme, which is the part where active recovery incorporates a mixture of body weight exercises with balance moves and stretching, to help reduce the aching muscles that you may experience the next day.

Again I actively encourage everyone to work to their own level.

Nobody knows your body like you do, you know what you are capable of and you know what you can do. I firmly believe that fitness should be about choices and that a coach should be inspirational not confrontational. I aim to inspire my class to achieve rather than drive those achievements out of them by force.

V Blast Beginner Plus - make that change!
